Summer Striders

Summer Striders is offered to elementary and middle-school students, ages 9-14 years old, who would like to stay active and challenged over the summer! Tahoe XC coaches, directed by Zan Larkins, will lead the Summer Striders through 10 weeks of running, biking, and hiking for 2 days a week plus one day each month for a longer event. Summer Striders will be divided into two age groups: 9-10 years old, and 11- 14 years old.

Beginning on Monday, June 17th, Summer Striders will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays each week at 3:30pm. Beginning in July, when the afternoon temperatures start to heat up, Summer Striders will shift to a morning meeting time, TBD.

Start date: June 17th, 2024
Practie Days: Mondays & Wednesdays
Practice Time: 3:30pm (in July Summer Striders will shift to a morning meet time)
Practice length: 1-1.5 hours
Location: North Tahoe High School or Tahoe XC
Registration: $325 (10 weeks)
Program Overview: Athletes and coaches meet 2x per week, typically at North Tahoe High School or Tahoe XC. Once per month, Summer Striders will meet for a longer day and locations may include the West Shore and Truckee. Exceptions may include weather, trail conditions, holidays, coach availibility, and “field trip” workouts. Email notifications will be sent ahead of time with details about each workout, time, and meeting place. Summer Striders will be divided into two age groups: 9-10 years old, and 11- 14 years old.

Weekly Workouts - What to Expect

Workouts are designed to encourage kids to try a broad range of activities, including but not limited to:

  • Trail running
  • Mountain biking
  • Hill bounding
  • Hiking
  • Team games

Requirements:

  • Trail running shoes
  • Eye protection
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Layered clothing appropriate for varying weather conditions
  • Sunscreen
  • Smile and a positive attitude

Head Coach: Zan Larkins

Zan was born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. She grew up with a love for being active in the outdoors. Zan has lived in Tahoe City since 2005. She loves recreating outside with her husband, daughter, and dog. She loves to trail run, mountain and road bike, backpack, and be on the lake. Zan’s most memorable outdoor events include completing the Deathride, the Lake Tahoe and Santa Cruz Half Ironmans, and the Tempe Arizona Full Ironman. Zan is the North Tahoe Middle School Nordic coach which is one of her favorite things about working for Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, where she is the nurse for Tahoe Lake Elementary, North Tahoe Middle and High School.
